Suna Kıraç was born to Vehbi Koç, a member of the largest business dynasty in Turkey, the Koç family.

Illness
In 1998 Kıraç was diagnosed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease that causes the death of neurons which control voluntary muscles, in the Houston Methodist Hospital. She was paralyzed throughout her entire body by 2000. She could not make any movement, and could communicate only by eye movement. To express her intentions, she winked for the right letter on a Turkish alphabet show card.
