Omali Yeshitela is an African revolutionary, political leader, theoretician and author. He is the founder and chairman of the African People's Socialist Party, which leads the Uhuru Movement.

According to its Constitution, the African People's Socialist Party is the "advanced detachment of the African working class and its general staff," pursuing the goal of "the liberation and unification of Africa and African people under the leadership of the African working class as a critical component of the struggle to overthrow imperialism."

Omali Yeshitela is the founder of The Burning Spear newspaper, the official journal of the African People's Socialist Party which has been in publication since 1968. Yeshitela is a writer and theoretician recognised for creating the revolutionary political theory known as "African internationalism."

Reparations

Yeshitela is credited with popularising the demand for reparations to African people in the US and worldwide, having served as the People's Advocate at the First International Tribunal on Reparations to Black People in the US, held in Brooklyn, NY in 1982.

Arrested on fake charges

On 29 July 2022, Omali Yeshitela was arrested in a pre-dawn raid on his house in St Louis, Missouri following an indictment by a Grand Jury alleging a conspiracy between Aleksandr Ionov and the Uhuru Movement to spread Russian disinformation under the guise of domestic political movements.

On 18 April 2023, the US Department of Justice indicted four US citizens (Omali Yeshitela and three other APSP officials) and three Russian nationals with working on behalf of the Russian government and in conjunction with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) to conduct a multi-year foreign malign influence campaign in the United States.[1]

On 20 April 2023, Yeshitela denounced the arrest of the APSP leaders under what he described as fake charges of acting for Russia.[2]
