Dr Nuray Mert is a Turkish journalist. An opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, she was invited to the 2015 Bilderberg meeting. one year before the failed 2016 Turkish coup attempt.
Mert was reportedly arrested after signing a petition in 2016 calling for a peaceful end to Turkey's three-decades-old conflict with Kurdish rebels, and sentenced in 2018 to "one year and three months in jail on charges of conducting terrorist propaganda".[1][2]
Education
She graduated from Işık High School. She completed her undergraduate education in the political science and history departments of Boğaziçi University. She received a master's degree in the history department of the same university, and a Ph.D in the field of political science with the study Secular Thought in the Early Republican Period.
Career
She worked as a research assistant at Boğaziçi University for a while. She worked as a faculty member of the department of political science and international relations of the Faculty of Economics of Istanbul University[3].
Mert wrote for Hürriyet. On March 6, 2011, she said, "If we can't freely write what we know to be true, there's no point in writing!" by throwing away the title, in protest at the restrictions imposed on the freedom of the press, she left.[4]
In 2012–2013, she was subsidized to be an International Scholar in Residence at the Stanford Humanities Center.[5]
She started writing in Milliyet newspaper on January 22, 2011. However, from the very first day, Milliyet's website did not publish Nuray Mert's articles.[6]
On February 11, 2012 Nuray Mert added a note to the end of her article that she will take a break from writing for a while. However, it was later revealed that the Milliyet administration had requested Nuray Mert to take a leave of absence for a while. After this uncertain process, on February 19, Milliyet announced it had parted ways with the author by not printing the article sent by Mert.[7]
Since January 11, 2013, she has continued to write in the BirGün newspaper. As of March 2015, 'she moved to Cumhuriyet newspaper.[8] Nuray Mert continues to comment on current political developments in Medyascope.[9]
