José Alberto Albano do Amarante was a Brazilian military officer and nuclear physicist, considered the father of nuclear research in Brazil.
Activities
In his military career, he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Air Force. He was involved in several strategic plans of the Brazilian aerospace industry and also, during the period of the military dictatorship, in the elaboration of the Brazil-Germany Atomic Energy Treaty of 1975. In his military role, he led the Center's Advanced Studies Laboratory in the late 1970s as Aerospace Technical Director.
Death
In September 1981, Amarante was hospitalized with rampant leukemia: he died in ten days. His death was investigated by the Air Force, suspecting that he had been contaminated, purposely, by radiation.[1]
According to his family, the officer was allegedly murdered by the intelligence services of the United States and Israel, due to the belief that his activities were linked to the development of nuclear weapons by Brazil.[2]
