History

History On April 23, 1990, Namibia became the 160th Member of the United Nations and the 50th Member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Namibia has largely pursued an independent foreign policy. It has close relations with the states that helped it in the War of Independence, including the People's Republic of China, Russia and Cuba. N

Namibia's main trade and economic partner is the Republic of South Africa. In March 1990, diplomatic relations were established between the two countries. In December 1994, South African President Nelson Mandela announced his Government's decision to write off Namibia's debt, which amounted to about 190 million US dollars. The port city of Walvis Bay was returned to Namibia.[2]
