Andreas Umland is a German political scientist, historian and Russian interpreter, specializing in contemporary Russian and Ukrainian history. He is a Member of the Institute for Central and East European Studies (ZIMOS) at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstad. He lives in Kyiv, while teaching at the National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy". His studies of Russian and Ukrainian politics focus on the post-Soviet extreme right, where his angle is maximizing extreme right influence in Russia for a Western readership, where "President Vladimir Putin's policies are more likely to find individual ideas and practices that are reminiscent of the policies of the Third Reich", while glossing over Ukrainian problems.

He was marginally mentioned in a Integrity Initiative document, where Chris Hernon gathered the twitter reactions of many "other users in our field".

Academic Career

From 1997–1999 he was a NATO Fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace, Palo Alto, California.

1999–2001 and 2002–2003 he worked as a specialist lecturer at the Robert Bosch Foundation at the University of Yekaterinburg and the National University of the Kiev Mohyla Academy.

2001–2002 he was a Thyssen Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and Research Associate at the Davis Center for Russian Studies at Harvard University. From January to December 2004 he was a substitute lecturer for Russian and Eastern European studies at the University of Oxford (St Antony’s College).

From 2005 to 2008 he was a DAAD lecturer at the Institute for International Relations at the National Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev.

2008–2010 was Academic Councilor at the Chair for Central and Eastern European History at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.

2010–2014 he taught as a DAAD lecturer and lecturer in the chair of political science in the master's program for German and European studies at the National University »Kiev Mohyla Academy«.
