Céline Fremault is a Belgian politician.[1]
In March 2019, she blocked the 5G rollout in Brussels as Environment Minister or the region, stating that "The people of Brussels are not laboratory mice".[2] In 2021, the Brussels regional government approved a higher limit for radiation emissions from cell-phone towers as a matter of "strategic importance", making 5G legal. The government promised "we have not given an inch on the necessary protection of our citizens and the environment".[2]
Career
In 1998, Fremault became an assistant to Francis Delperee, who was a professor at UCL at the time. She held this mandate until 2001, when she became a lecturer in public law at the Institut Cardijn. In 1999 she became a parliamentary assistant to the PSC parliamentary group of the Senate until 2003.
In 2004 she was elected as a member of the Brussels-Capital Parliament and was re-elected to this mandate in 2009. She sat there until 2013. From 2009 to 2013 she was also chairman of the Center démocrate humaniste (cdH) faction in the Brussels-Capital Parliament. In the 2019 elections, Fremault was re-elected to the Brussels-Capital Parliament as CDH leader. From 2019 to 2020 she was secretary there and since 2020 she is again chairwoman of the cdH faction.
On March 8, 2013, she succeeded Benoît Cerexhe as Minister of Employment, Economy, Foreign Trade and Scientific Research in the Brussels, a mandate she retained until July 20, 2014. On this date she was appointed Minister of the Environment, Energy, Water Policy, Urban Renewal, Fire Fighting and Emergency Medical Assistance and Housing, where she remained until July 18, 2019.
