Overview
Vicenza has an estimated population of 115,000[1] and a metropolitan area of 270,000. Vicenza is the third-largest Italian industrial centre as measured by the value of its exports, and is one of the country's wealthiest cities,[2][3] in large part due to its textile and steel industries, which employ tens of thousands. Additionally, about one fifth of the country's gold and jewelry is made in Vicenza, greatly contributing to the city's economy. Another important sector is the engineering/computer components industry
Caserma Ederle
Caserma Ederle (Camp Ederle) is a military complex in Vicenza, where the United States Army has troops stationed.[4] The Vicenza Military Community is composed of soldiers, family members, civilians and retirees with a small number of airmen and sailors also stationed there. The post serves as the headquarters of United States Army Africa and the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade ("Sky Soldiers"[5]) is an airborne infantry brigade combat team of the United States Army. It is the United States European Command's conventional airborne strategic response force for Europe.[6] Since its reactivation in 2000, the brigade fought in the Middle East and Afghanistan, and participated in the 2001 invasion of Iraq.[7]
United States Army Africa (USARAF), also known as the Southern European Task Force(SETAF), was the United States Army service component command of United States Africa Command.[8] USARAF's headquarters were located on Caserma Ederle and Caserma Del Din in Vicenza.
In 2020, the Army announced that USARAF will merge with U.S. Army Europe to form a new command, United States Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF).[9] The two commands were consolidated on November 20, 2020.[10][11]
