The Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas) are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about 300 miles east of Argentina's southern Patagonian coast, at a latitude of about 52°S.

In 1982, they were invaded by Argentina, but recaptured after brief fighting by the UK after the Falklands War.
