In 2011 U.S. District Judge George Daniels signed a default judgment finding Iran, the Taliban and al Qaeda liable in the attacks. He ordered Iran to pay $10.5 billion to victims and insurers of the attacks. Iran was ordered to pay $7.5 billion to 9/11 victims’ families; $6.88 million in punitive damages, and $2 million to each victim’s estate for pain and suffering. Additionally, the insurance companies who paid for property damage and claimed their businesses were interrupted were awarded $3 billion.[1] In September 2015, Daniels ruled that Saudi Arabia had "sovereign immunity" from prosecution in regard to the events of September 11.[2]
