The Norwegian School of Economics (Norwegian: Norges Handelshøyskole) NHH is a business school situated in Bergen, Norway. It was founded in 1936 as Norway's first business school and has since its establishment been a leading teaching and research institution in the fields of economics and business administration.[1]

History

The NHH was established in Bergen due to the significant mercantile tradition in the city. A predecessor was the Bergen Commercial High School, founded in 1904. As early as 1917, the Storting decided at about the same time as the other Scandinavian countries to establish a business school, but this decision was not implemented for a long time. The pioneer in founding the university was the Bergen politician Kristofer Didrik Lehmkuhl. One reason for locating in Bergen was that not all of Norway's further education institutions should be concentrated in Oslo, where economics and statistics were taught at the university.

On September 7, 1936, the school started a two-year course, which ended with the title commercial candidate, 10 years before the University of Bergen was established. Since the 1950s, it has been based on the American business school model.

A large part of Norway's financial and business elite was educated at the NHH. Numerous graduates work in management consulting, auditing and banking.
