Alberto Giovannetti was the Italian Catholic Church and the Vatican diplomat, permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations, a member of Opus Dei and a member of Le Cercle.

Career

Alberto Giovannetti was the secretary of Pope Pius XII. In 1940 he graduated from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. During World War II he served in the Vatican's Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs. On March 21, 1964 he was appointed by Paul VI as permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. As apostolic nuncio worked among others for peace in the Middle East. During the Six Day War he appealed to UN member states to put Jerusalem under international control. He authored several books describing the history of the Catholic Church. In 1978 he published a political fiction novel entitled Requiem for a spy, based partly on the experience gained in the service of Vatican diplomacy.
