Iccho Itoh was Mayor of Nagasaki for 12 years until his death.

Denouncing nuclear weapons

He spoke before International Court of Justice in the Hague in 1995, denouncing use of nuclear weapons as a violation of international law. In April 2007, campaigning for re-election, shot twice in the back at point-blank range at his campaign office. Iccho Itoh died April 18, 2007.

Assassination
