Deborah Ann Wilcox, Baroness Wilcox of Newport, is a former teacher and Welsh Labour Party councillor who served from May 2016 until September 2019 as Leader of Newport City Council.[1][2][3][4]
In September 2019, it was announced that Debbie Wilcox would be made a life peer in Theresa May's Resignation Honours list,[5] and would be stepping down as head of the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA).[6]
On 1 May 2020, Baroness Wilcox was appointed by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to a panel of three Labour peers (with Ruth Lister and Larry Whitty) to conduct an inquiry into the leaked report "The work of the Labour Party’s Governance and Legal Unit in relation to antisemitism, 2014-2019".[7][8]
Momentum chair Jon Lansman tweeted: "I'm deeply disappointed to learn that Baroness Debbie Wilcox, former leader of Newport City Council, has tweeted clearly factional support for anti-Corbyn statements by Iain McNicol & others, & for Labour First & Progress. She's therefore clearly unsuitable for the Inquiry panel."[9]
The Leaked Labour Report Inquiry is headed by Martin Forde QC and is expected to conclude in July 2020 when Forde presents his findings to Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC).[10]
