Hubert Brasier was a clergyman of the Church of England, and father of Theresa May, 54th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.[1] He died in a car crash in 1981.
Background
Hubert Brasier was born in Wandsworth, London to Tom Brasier, a clerk and former sergeant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and Amy Margaret, née Patterson. In 1940, he graduated from the University of Leeds and trained at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield. His wife was Zaidee Mary (née Barnes; 1928–1982), whom he married at St Giles' Church, Reading in 1955.[2]
Career
Rev Hubert Brasier was made a deacon in 1942 and ordained at Southwark Cathedral in 1943. He was curate of St Andrew's Catford from 1942, then of St Luke's Reigate from 1948. In 1953, he became chaplain of All Saints' Hospital in Eastbourne and reportedly worked "alongside the famous serial killer Dr John Bodkin Adams".[3] He became vicar of Enstone (with Heythrop from 1964) in 1959 and finally of St Mary the Virgin, Wheatley, to the east of Oxford, from 1970. As Vicar of Wheatley, May wrote a short guide to the parish church.[4]
Premature death
On 12 October 1981, the 64-year-old Revd Brasier set off in his Morris Marina for the service at a church in the nearby village of Forest Hill, just outside Oxford. He edged forward from a central reservation on the A40 — straight into the path of a Range Rover and died of head and spine injuries shortly after the accident. Oxfordshire Coroner Nicholas Gardiner, who recorded a verdict of accidental death. His wife was to die months later, from multiple sclerosis.[5]
