Career
He was democratically elected as President of Guatemala and initiated a programme of land reform. Since this would be an upset to the United Fruit Company, they used the CIA to organize the 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état. Árbenz, fearing widespread fighting a nd loss of life, capitulated to the coup leaders and was exiled.
Death
He was scalded to death in a bathtub while in Mexico, still exiled from Guatemala. This was ruled a suicide.
