Azidothymidine (AZT), also known as Zidovudine (ZDV) is an antiretroviral medication used to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. The drug, approved by the FDA under Anthony Fauci, wiped out a generation of people diagnosed with HIV in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but not before making GlaxoSmithKline/Wellcome Trust billions in revenue.

Safe and effective

On February 19, 1988, Anthony Fauci appeared on the television program Good Morning America, where he was asked why only one drug, AZT, had been made available.

The reason why only one drug has been made available — AZT — is because it’s the only drug that has been shown in scientifically controlled trials to be safe and effective.[1]
