Azidothymidine (AZT), also known as Zidovudine (ZDV) is an antiretroviral medication used to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. On February 19, 1988, Anthony Fauci appeared on the television program Good Morning America, where he was asked why only one drug, AZT, had been made available.
