mRNA vaccine development

In April 2021, Monash received $50m from the Victorian government for mRNA vaccine development and manufacturing. Monash University will work with the Victorian Government, the University of Melbourne and research institutes including The Doherty Institute to establish and scale mRNA vaccine manufacturing in Victoria. “We are very keen to push ahead with the second generation COVID-19 vaccine we are working on, and looking to the future, we’re collaborating with a number of researchers who are interested in how the mRNA platform could be used for other medical applications,” Professor Colin Pouton said.[4]

In November 2024, the "vaccine" manufacturer Moderna announced that $2 billion mRNA factory at Monash University now was operational, and is producing product while waiting for final regulatory approval. The $2 billion plant will pump out 100 million mRNA jabs per year. [5][6]
