De Gruyter studied Dutch language and literature at Utrecht University.

De Gruyter writes regular columns for Foreign Policy, EUobserver and De Standaard, and is a member of George Soros' European Council on Foreign Relations.[2]

She has written five books - all dealing, in one way or another, with globalization, democracy and the political quicksands of sovereignty. Book number five (March 2021) is a best-selling comparison between the EU and the Habsburg Empire.[2]
