The 2021 Japanese general election was held on 31 October 2021.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga resigned in September 2021.[1] He was replaced by Fumio Kishida as Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Democrats. Their manifesto included an electronic vaccine passport system.[2]

Knife attack

On election day a knifeman dressed as the Joker attacked commuters on the Tokyo Metro, and started a fire on one of the carriages. 17 people were injured, with no fatalities reported.[3]

Exit polls

Exit polls suggested the ruling coalition would return to office on a smaller majority.
