John Arthur Palladino[1] was an American private investigator and attorney. Career
The private detective and lawyer had worked for a long list of high-profile names over a decades-long career, which began in 1974 when he was hired by the family of Patty Hearst to assist with her kidnapping by the Symbionese Liberation Army.[3]
In a career that spanned nearly 50 years, Palladino became known for taking on high-profile and controversial cases. The San Francisco Examiner noted in 1999 that he had "built a reputation for aggressive investigations, an in-your-face style and the ability to neutralize adverse witnesses and spin hostile media.[4]
The private detective was hired by Bill Clinton in 1992 to quell rumors of his extramarital affairs, and by Harvey Weinstein in 2017 to stop his victims from speaking out.[3]
Palladino also worked for Kevin Costner, Robin Williams, Huey Newton, Snoop Dogg, John DeLorean, Courtney Love, Hells Angels leader Sonny Barger, and a 14-year-old boy who won a multimillion-dollar civil settlement against Michael Jackson for molestation, among others.[3]
In April 2009, Australian businessman Peter Holmes à Court admitted in the Supreme Court of New South Wales that the Hollywood actor Russell Crowe had hired Palladino & Sutherland to investigate opposition to the planned takeover of the South Sydney Rabbitohs football club.[5] Crowe had first gotten to know Palladino and his Australian wife and partner, Sandra Sutherland, when all three worked on the film The Insider.[6]
Death
On January 28, 2021, Palladino suffered a traumatic brain injury and was placed on life support following a robbery outside his Haight-Ashbury home.[2][3] He was taken off life support and died on February 1, 2021.
In February 2023, prosecutors in San Francisco dropped all charges against two men accused in the murder, citing a lack of evidence.[7]
