John Hughes-Wilson is a full time author and broadcaster specialising in military-historical and intelligence matters. He has commentated widely on military and intelligence subjects.
Career
After initial service as an infantry officer with the Sherwood Foresters, during his 25 years in the Intelligence Corps and as a Special Forces Operations officer, he saw active service in the Falkland Islands, Cyprus, Arabia, and Northern Ireland as well in Whitehall and NATO.[1]
He retired in 1994 as a Colonel on NATO's International Political Staff [Brussels]. His military career also included posts: Head of Policy Section and Senior British Intelligence Officer, SHAPE. [Mons] and Intelligence, Counter Terrorism, Special Forces. UK/ NATO appointments, Command and Staff.[1]
Since retiring from the Army he has travelled and lectured extensively. He has trained the Palestinian Police in Gaza on intelligence for counter-terrorism and improvised explosive devices for the EU, plus numerous other training contracts for the UN in the Balkans, the Swiss General Staff and the UNDP. He supervised Cranfield University’s Intelligence module for the Global Security MSc for ten years and has been a visiting university lecturer for a number of universities as well as international corporations such as Shell, Reuters, IBM, UBS and the City of London.[1]
In addition to being an Associate Fellow of RUSI and member of the RUSI Journal's Advisory Board, he is also an Archives Bi-Fellow of Churchill College Cambridge. His works include: Puppet Masters: The Secret History of Intelligence (Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2004), Military Intelligence Blunders, 1999 [new edition, 2004], Blindfold and Alone (with Cathryn Corns), 2001 and Editor, with international experts, of Nuclear Strategy for the 21st Century 1996 [2]
