Hanja Maij-Weggen was the Dutch Minister for Transport and Water Management from 1989 to 1994. She first joined the Anti-Revolution Party in the 60s as a teacher. She became spokesperson for women's rights at the UN after her success within this party in the 1970s.[1]
Plane crashes
She lead the Dutch government over two air disasters which resulted in the death of at least 94 civilians, with the Bijlmer disaster the one with the most civilian casualties on Dutch soil. Her lack of knowledge about the latter was noted be quite strange as officials much lower in hierarchy had knowledge of classified info before her, hinting possible cover-ups.[2]
Drug Smuggling
Her two biggest achievements are the introduction of the carpool lane in the Netherlands - a completely failed project - and the industrial Betuwe-Railway. The railway was meant to relieve the already congested Dutch railway system by making the railway specifically usable for industrial trains for the Port of Rotterdam, despite enormous opposition from multiple scholars, professors and civilians the railway was built and is still not completely finished, resulting in multiple trains with very dangerous chemicals to still run through cities and stations. Deputy Police-commander Joop van Riessen hinted that the route would be used for Drug Smuggling, which was already an frequent reason for police operations in the Port of Rotterdam.[3]
