Located in Athens, Georgia, the ' University of Georgia is the oldest public university in the United States. There are about 34,000 students and 2,794 lecturers at the university. It has an annual budget of around 1.2 billion US dollars and is spread over a total of 327 buildings. The university is one of the best state universities in the USA (Public Ivy). Since 1931 it has been part of the University System of Georgia, administered by a Board of Regents.

The university shapes the city of Athens both culturally and politically.
