CEO of Portuguese electric utilities company. Strongly committed to net zero, urging "audacity and an acceleration of the energy transition rather the pausing or pursuing a path of moderation". Attended 2023 Bilderberg meeting. |
Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade is CEO of EDP, a Portuguese electric utilities company, with operations across Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific. He has strongly committed himself and his company to net zero by 2030, urging "audacity and an acceleration of the energy transition rather the pausing or pursuing a path of moderation".
He attended the 2023 Bilderberg meeting.
Education
He received a MEng from the University of Strathclyde in 1998, and an MBA from MIT Sloan in 2003.[1]
Career
He worked as an investment banker for UBS 1998-2000.
He has worked for Energias de Portugal (EDP) since year 2000, becoming CEO in 2021.[1]
EDP has invested heavily in solar and wind power. It also has pledged to produce 1.5 gigawatts of electricity from renewable hydrogen by 2030 and plans to repurpose coal plants – to be phased out in 2025 – for producing that hydrogen.[2] "More than 75% of the energy produced by EDP comes from "renewable sources", and the goal is to be all-green by 2030", said Andrade[3].
He is a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development Executive Committee and of the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders. He is an agenda contributor to the World Economic Forum.[4]
He was "not particularly worried" of a Trump win in 2024, betting on soaring green power demand from Big Tech and continued commitment from America's states to outweigh any drawbacks from a Donald Trump victory.[5] Trump had promised to end the massive subsidies for "green power".
Opinions
"Sceptics have even called for a more cautious energy transition. EDP CEO Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade is not one of them. Miguel instead urges audacity and an acceleration of the energy transition rather the pausing or pursuing a path of moderation."[2]
