The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, commonly known simply as Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), is a Palestinian Islamist paramilitary organisation formed in 1981 by Fathi Abd al-Aziz al-Shikaki, a physician from Rafah in the Gaza Strip. Ziyad al-Nakhalah was elected Secretary General of Islamic Jihad in September 2018, succeeding Ramadan Shalah, one of PIJ’s earliest members who suffered a stroke.
While Islamic Jihad rose through the network of the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine it soon developed into a distinct organisation, shaped by growing militarism and heavily influenced by the 1979 Iranian Revolution.[1]
PIJ is a member of the Alliance of Palestinian Forces, which rejects the Oslo Accords and whose objective is the establishment of a sovereign Islamic Palestinian state. PIJ calls for the military destruction of Israel and rejects a two-state solution. Financial backing for the PIJ has historically come mainly from Syria and Hezbollah. Since 2014, PIJ has seen its power steadily increase with the backing of funds from Iran.
Islamic Jihad has notably participated in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war (2023–present), fighting alongside Hamas and other allied Palestinian factions.[2]
