Ibn al-Khattab was named by the FSB as the mastermind behind the Russian apartment bombings. He died on 20 March 2002 following exposure to a poisoned letter delivered via a courier who had been recruited by Russia's Federal Security Service.[1]
Threats and denials
Some sources cite an interview with Greg Myre of the Associated Press published on September 14th, Khattab stated that: “From now on they will get our bombs everywhere. Let Russia await our explosions blasting through their cities. I swear we will do it.” That interview was held between 9-13 September. On September 14th, Khattab told the Interfax news agency in Grozny that he had nothing to do with the Moscow explosions. He was quoted as saying: “We would not like to be akin to those who kill sleeping civilians with bombs and shells.”[2]
