The Democratic Alliance (DA) is a South African political party which in June 2024 agreed to join an SA/Government of National Unity[1] with the African National Congress (ANC), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Patriotic Alliance.[2]
The DA has previously often opposed ANC policies related to economic, labour, healthcare and foreign policy decisions, ranging from workers’ rights to South Africa’s stance on supporting Palestine.[3]
The DA traces its roots to the founding of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party in 1959, with many mergers and name changes since that time.
