Atte Sakari Jääskeläinen is a Finnish editor-in-chief.

Education and career

Jääskeläinen has a bachelor's degree in law. He worked as a notary and the oldest notary in the Helsinki Court of Appeals and District Court from 1993 to 1994.

He was a financial journalist at Helsingin Sanomat, specializing in banking matters during the recession and banking crisis in Finland in the 1990s.

He was political editor at Helsingin Sanomat (2001–2004) and then financial editor (1995–2001).

After that, he worked in 2004–2006 as the editor-in-chief and managing director of the Finnish News Agency.

2007–2017, Jääskeläinen worked as the Director of News and Current Affairs and corresponding Editor-in-Chief of YLE, the state TV and radio corporation. He was hired by Yleisradio from the beginning of 2007 as its first editor-in-chief after the company combined radio and TV news into Yle Uutis. In the summer of 2007, he became a member of YLE's management team in charge of news, regional activities and sports.

In the spring of 2017, Jääskeläinen left his position as YLE's director of news and current affairs and editor-in-chief as a result of long-standing criticism ,after he bowed to government pressure not to publish an embarrassing article. Three YLE employees said anonymously that Yle's management stopped three follow-up news about Prime Minister Sipilä.

In the period 2017–2018, Jääskeläinen was a visiting researcher in the UK at the Reuters Institute of the University of Oxford.

On 6 August 2020, the Government appointed him Director General of the Ministry of Education and Culture for a fixed-term employment period from 1 October 2020 to 30 September 2025.

Jääskeläinen has written a book on the European Monetary System EMS and Finland.

Per 2021, he is a working life professor at LUT University[1], chairman of the university's Advisory Board and media and management consultant. He is also a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics.
