A missile defense is a system to detect, track, intercept and finally destroy attacking missiles. Conceived as a defense against nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), its application has broadened to include shorter-ranged non-nuclear tactical, or theater missiles.

Technologies that can be used are:

  • Missiles that are able to intercept incoming missiles;[1]
  • Laser technology;[2]
  • Atmospheric heaters (like Haarp), which is said to be able heat the atmosphere in front of incoming missiles (nuclear ICBM), which is meant to cause too much stress on it's material and cause break up in flight, or create a plasma, or cause electronic disturbances which cause a similar outcome;[3][4][5][6]

NATO missile defense system

The NATO missile defense system is a missile defense system being constructed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in several member states and around the Mediterranean Sea. Plans for this system have changed several times since first studied in 2002.[7]
