Alibaba was founded by Jack Ma, a ambitious Chinese self-made millionaire. The name comes the Middle Eastern folk-tale collection One Thousand and One Nights.[1]
In 1999, The Wallenberg Family gave Jack Ma - operating the site from his apartment in Hangzhou 25 million US Dollars though their firm Investor AB. After Goldman Sachs and Softbank also invested in Ma's company, Alibaba became profitable 3 years after launch.
Octopus
Alibaba has become somewhat of a financial octopus, with shares and companies in every industry. It has become the biggest venture capital firm and investment corporation in Asia and Europe, as well as the second largest financial services group behind Visa.[2][3]
Covid-19
Whether with foreknowledge or as result of investing right during the COVID-19 is unclear, in 2020, it became the fifth-largest artificial intelligence company.[4]
