There will be a by-election in the UK Parliament constituency of Brecon and Radnorshire in 2019 following the successful recall petition for the dismissal of Tory MP Christopher Paul Davies, who had held the seat since the 2015 UK General Election.[1][2]

Background

The Liberal Democrats had held the seat from 1997 until the 2015 General Election, when Chris P. Davies won it for the Conservatives.[3] He retained his seat at the UK/2017 General Election. Davies was charged with false expenses claims, pursuant to the Parliamentary Standards Act 2009.[4] He pleaded guilty in March 2019[5][6] and, in April, was sentenced to a community order of 50 hours unpaid work and a £1,500 fine.[7] The Recall of MPs Act 2015 mandates that all convictions of sitting MPs for providing false or misleading expenses claims automatically initiate the recall processes.

Candidates and campaign

The Liberal Democrats candidate is Jane Dodds, the leader of the Welsh Lib Dems. The Labour Party candidate is Councillor Tom Davies. The Brexit Party candidate is Des Parkinson, Liz Phillips is standing for UKIP and Lady Lily The Pink for the Monster Raving Loony Party.[8]

Plaid Cymru indicated that they might not stand a candidate in order to support another party supporting a second referendum on Brexit, taken to be a reference to the Liberal Democrats.

Shortly after the result of the recall petition was announced, bookmakers made the Liberal Democrats odds on favourites to win.[9]
