Superintends the work of the Crown Prosecution Service, makes sure certain things are brushed under the carpet.

Duties

The Attorney General for England and Wales "superintends" the work of the Crown Prosecution Service by having regular meetings and also answers for it in the UK Parliament. The Attorney can also claim "national security" grounds to influence the conduct of prosecutions.

Coverup of Establishment Paedophilia

In April 1981 Sir Michael Havers, the Attorney General, stated in parliament that while Peter Hayman was a member of the Paedophile Information Exchange, he was never a member of the executive committee, so was not prosecuted as others were for publishing contact advertisements.[1][2]

It is uncertain whether this is related to the 2015 report of a former detective: "I was in a car with two other vice squad officers... The detective sergeant said he had just had a major child abuse investigation shut down by the CPS regarding a royal and an MP."[3]

Protection of Establishment War Criminal

In 2017, Jeremy Wright moving to try to stop such the private prosecution of Tony Blair. A spokesman stated “It’s not unusual for the attorney general to intervene in cases in order to represent the public interest. He has sought to intervene in this case because it raises important issues about the scope of the criminal law.” [4]
