Ryan Gawn is a political and strategic communications expert, with extensive experience in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Latin America.[1]
A former Council Member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), he writes extensively on conflict, campaigning, advocacy, soft power and foreign affairs.
Career
He is Co-founder of Stratagem International[2], an international political affairs and strategic communications consultancy, where he has worked for leading corporations, NGOs, political leaders and governmental departments in delivering effective PR. It works exclusively in fragile and conflict affected environments.
Whilst previously based in Pakistan, he ran a multi-channel award-winning £20m campaign for UK’s Department for International Development and also supported the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in political campaigning. [3] He has written on "how to gain influence in divided and politically complex societies", giving advice to those "seeking to influence" elections[4],which is apparently OK when the UK does it.
He has published in The Guardian, Foreign Policy[5], Global Dashboard, and the Foreign Policy Association[6]. He was a panelist at the 2010 NATO Summit in Lisbon, and also tweets regularly.
In 2005 he advised the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, and in 2016, he authored a report on digital diplomacy and social media for a later Secretary-General, António Guterres.
He is a member of the Transatlantic Network of the British Council[7], has worked with the FCO, DFID, and was formerly Head of International Communications for ActionAid and the research and analytics consultancy Penn Schoen Berland.
He has acted as an advisor[To whom?] on affairs in Iraqi Kurdistan.
