Kursk is a city and the administrative centre of Kursk Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Kur, Tuskar, and Seym rivers. It has a population of 440,052 (2021 Census).

Battle of Kursk

The area around Kursk was the site of a turning point in the Soviet UnionNazi Germany struggle during World War II and the site of the Battle of Kursk, the single largest battle in history.

Incursion by Ukraine

On 11 August 2024, the BBC reported:

Ukrainian troops have advanced up to 30km inside Russia, in what has become the deepest and most significant incursion since Moscow began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Russia's defence ministry said its forces had engaged Ukrainian troops near the villages of Tolpino and Obshchy Kolodez, as the offensive in the Kursk Region entered a sixth day.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Kyiv of "intimidating the peaceful population of Russia".[1]
