André Roberto Delaunay Gonçalves Pereira was a lawyer and politician. He attended the 1984 Bilderberg meeting.
Background
He was the son of Prof. Dr. António Armando Gonçalves Pereira (22 January 1901-30 January 1983),a Goan (Portuguese India) Catholic, lawyer, and his wife Viviane Marie Leontine Nicole Delaunay (6 December 1912-23 November 2009), a Frenchwoman. He had a brother, also a lawyer.
Education
He studied at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, where he graduated in law and pursued master's and doctoral studies, both on matters of Administrative Law (1959 and 1962).[1]
Career
A diciple of law professor Marcello Caetano, who was the last leader of the Estado Novo until the revolution in 1974, he became a full professor in 1970.[2] He has also taught at foreign universities, namely at the University of Rio de Janeiro, Complutense University of Madrid and Columbia University.
André Gonçalves Pereira reconciled his academic career with that of a lawyer. Admitted to the bar in 1959[3], he practiced law and continued the office established by his father, Armando Gonçalves Pereira (also a lawyer and university professor (but in Economics), in 1928[4].
The office would merge in 2004 with the Spanish Cuatrecasas, one of the main law firms in Spain. The merger would give rise to Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves Pereira & Associados[5].
André Gonçalves Pereira also held several public functions. Among others, he was representative of Portugal in the Legal Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations, from 1959 to 1966, and also Portuguese representative in the reflection group that prepared the reform of the Maastricht Treaty in 1995. In addition, he participated in several international organizations, such as UNESCO and the IMF.[3]
He was also Minister of Foreign Affairs in the early 1980s, in governments led by Francisco Pinto Balsemão.
He was also a non-executive director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, appointed in 2002, as well as several commercial companies.
Marriage
He married, at the age of 50, Laura Teixeira Botelho Madeira (born 1960), daughter of Henrique Madeira and his wife Maria Emília Teixeira Botelho de Moura Borges and sister of José Justino Teixeira Botelho Madeira. He had no descendants.
He died on September 9, 2019, a victim of prolonged illness.[6]
