Documentary about Gary DeVore

The Writer with No Hands is a 2014 British documentary about the death of Gary DeVore who was in the process of writing a script about Contadora island. The film was initially released in 2014 with 1 hour/ 26 minutes playtime.[1] By January of 2015 the website was disabled with a note that the film is being re-edited.[2] A "final-cut" at 1 hour / 11 minutes was released in 2017.[3]

In this highly accessible and innovative micro-budget documentary, Dr. Matthew Alford aims to expose government interference in Hollywood movies by proving an acclaimed screenwriter was murdered. The writer was working on a controversial script about real-life CIA bank jobs when he disappeared. Several months later his body was found in a California aqueduct - minus both his hands. Following years of research, Alford decides to visit L.A to prove it was an assassination. He persuades a filmmaker to join him and record the investigation. The problem is that - just like the film industry Alford is trying to expose - the director has his own agenda, and when finally confronted about this he is forced to admit his intentions and turn the lens on himself.[4]

Reception

The original film won The Tablet of Honor at the Ammar Popular Film Festival in December 2014. The final cut won Best Documentary at the Vienna Independent Film Festival and the Creation International Film Festival, following a series of screenings at independent venues around the world during June.[5]
