Carlos Slim Helú is a Mexican business magnate, investor, and "philanthropist".
From 2010 to 2013, Slim was ranked as the richest person in the world.[1] He was a large contributor to the Clinton Foundation.[2]
Background
Slim's brother, Julian, was an official with the now extinct Federal Security Department, or DFS, and was directly involved in the "Dirty War" of the 1970s against socialists, communists and activists, during which thousands of people were kidnapped, tortured, disappeared, killed or imprisoned.
Slim's wedding was officiated by Marcial Maciel, the founder of the highly controversial Legions of Christ. Maciel and collaborators were accused of corruption and massive cases of pedophilia.[3]
Activities
Slim might be a frontman for former president Carlos Salinas de Gortari. Slim became wealthy thanks exclusively to his ties with Salinas, who gave Telmex — the Mexican telephone company that for many decades had a complete monopoly on landlines — away to Slim for almost nothing[3]
Slim is linked to the drug trade.[3]
Slim funded the movie Sound of Freedom.[4]
