One of the first and most important dissidents against Covid. |
Sucharit Bhakdi (born Sucharit Punyaratabandhu) is a retired Thai-German microbiologist. He was a professor at the University of Mainz, where from 1991-2012 he was head of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene[1] In March 2020, he wrote an open letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel about the "socio-economic consequences of the drastic containment measures which are currently being applied in large parts of Europe". An early, highly qualified and vehement critic of COVID-19 misinformation from the government -- including the imposition of lockdowns, facemasks, and experimental gene therapies -- he was widely dismissed as an "anti-vaxxer" by the commercially-controlled media, and charged in 2021 with "anti-semitism". He was acquitted in 2023, by which point he had been shown to have been "right on just about every count" about his criticism of the COVID measures.
Trial and acquittal
In an attempt at brown-baiting all dissidence against Covid, the German justice system opened a case against Bhakdi in November 2021 for inciting hatred against people of the Jewish faith[2] The prosecutor demanded a fine of 180 daily rates of 90 euros each, or five years in prison, for sedition. The statement from in question was:
“I admired the Israelis more than any people in the world. ... The greatest spirits were Jews, I adored them ... And now they are doing this. The people who have fled from this country [Germany], where the evil one [Hitler] was, have turned their own country into something even worse. It's unbelievable. There is no people who study better than them, but they have learned and implemented evil. And that's why Israel is now living hell.”
Sucharit Bhakdi [3]
He was acquitted in May 2023.[4] The prosecution immediately appealed the acquittal[5].
Spiegel advocating for purge
In 2023, the corporate media magazine Spiegel[6] advocated for him being stripped of the title of professor. The magazine also advocated for this purging to happen to Michael Meyen, Patrik Baab and Ulrike Guérot, three other dissidents or critical academics. The article was written by Spiegel-editor Lisa Duhm under a pseudonym.[7]
