In 1980 Arthur Dunkel became the first WTO DG, a position he held until July 1993.

At the 1993 Bilderberg, Arthur Dunkel was a panelist with Lane Kirkland on Prospects For Global Trade. The moderator of the discussion was Peter Sutherland, who took over the post of DG from Arthur Dunkel some ten weeks later.
