Sven Gustav Aspling, was a Swedish social democratic politician and liaison between the CIA's Swedish chief William Colby and the Social Democratic government during the construction of the Swedish NATO Stay behind network.

He was Minister of Social Affairs in 1962-1976 and close associate of Prime Minister Tage Erlander.

Early Life

Aspling grew up under simple conditions as the son of train drivers Gustaf Persson and Alida Aspling, and only attended six-year primary school. He was employed as a journalist in Filipstad for Värmlands Folkblad 1937-1942 and then at the central editorial office in Karlstad. From 1941 to 1946 he was a Social Democratic Ombudsman in Dalarna before being employed by the party bureau in Stockholm as organizational secretary.

Political career

In 1948, Aspling became party secretary and member of the party board. In 1956, Aspling was elected to the first chamber and then sat in parliament until 1985. Aspling was Minister of Social Affairs in 1962–76 and chaired by the Parliamentary Social Insurance Committee from 1976 to 1985.

As party secretary, Aspling acted as liaison between the CIA's Swedish chief William Colby and the Social Democratic government during the construction of the Swedish Stay behind network 1951-53.

Aspling was the last person Olof Palme spoke to on the phone on February 28, 1986, just before the Prime Minister and his wife left for the cinema and he later were assassinated on the way back[1][2]
