The Baseball League (Swedish: Baseballigan) was the nickname of a group of police officers within the Stockholm police District 1 in Norrmalm who in the early 1980s were accused of using violence and harassment in the performance of their duties.
Name origin
The name comes from the fact that the police officers in question preferred to perform in civilian clothes with a baseball cap as a headdress, instead of uniform.[1]
Activities
Several of the officers were found to have Nazi sympathies and involvement. Prime Minister Olof Palme himself was also informed about the Nazi currents that existed within certain police circles.[2] Links exist between members of the Baseball League and the investigation into the Palme murder in 1986, an investigation that went nowhere.
Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson resigned the day after two "off-duty" policemen who were part of the Baseball League were caught when climbing onto his roof.
