Description | Shoot-down of a Russian Su24M bomber over Syria by a Turkish F16 fighter on 24 November 2015 |
A Russian Sukhoi Su-24M bomber aircraft was shot down by a Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet near the Syria–Turkey border on 24 November 2015.[1] According to Turkey, the aircraft was fired upon while in Turkish airspace because it violated the border up to a depth of 2.19Km for about 17 seconds after being warned to change its heading 10 times over a period of five minutes. [2] The Russia Defence Ministry denied the aircraft ever left Syrian airspace, counter-claiming that their satellite data showed that the Sukhoi was about 1km inside Syrian airspace when it was shot down.[3] On 30 November 2015, the pilot Colonel Oleg Peshkov's body arrived at the Chkalovsky military airport near Moscow, and was met by Minister of Defence Sergei Shoigu and Russian air force Commander-in-Chief Victor Bondarev.[4]
