Traditionally in the British sphere of influence after Greek independence in 1827, the United States took over the lead position in the first years after WW2.
Greece is a strategic country and the base for operations in the Middle East and Balkans, and thus has a significant military and intelligence value, which is reflected in the choice of diplomats. For many years, Greece had an strong and active left wing that posed a threat to these interests, necessitating further intelligence involvement.
After the end of the Junta, significant effort was put in integrating Greece into European Structures like the European Union.
