War crimes in this event have been difficult to report on because of the shooting and kidnapping of journalists, which has become normal in modern warfare.
War crimes
Patrick Lancaster's YouTube channel, 31 March 2022: 6:31 - "Such a relief! - Ukrainian army committed terrible things here! Terrible! How we only managed to survive! - And they said to everybody, “Take your things and leave”. And where to go? – How can I abandon my flat and just go away? – We stayed and they bombed everything here. 6:50 – They kicked out people from their houses in the settlements. They occupied the premises and put there their guns, mortars. – You don’t say so. It’s not DPR. It’s Ukraine. DPR did just a bit. While Ukraine hid its equipment… - Between the houses, near kindergartens, schools" |
Alleged war crimes (by both sides, although not reported as such) include:
1. Indiscriminate attacks and attacks against civilian objects (bombing hospitals, civilian buildings,[1] mining routes used by refugees fleeing Ukraine [2] and targeting nuclear power plants [3])
2. Killing [4] civilians [5][6] and soldiers[7] already surrendering
3. Using children as human shields by letting them sit on top of tanks [8]
4. Rape [9] (interestingly in this case, the locals reported the Russian officers upon being told of this by them arrested the perpetrators and promised they'd be summarily executed)
6. Deportations [12]
Many of those incidents have not been filmed, only for an aftermath to be shown on TV, making is a useful tool for more propaganda as it's not possible to verify these allegations.

Former US Navy solider Patrick Lancaster has remained as one of the only non Ukrainians still reporting from the war zones, continuing work from the 2014 Ukraine coup/Civil war. In particular, the bombing and killing of civilians inside the Donbass appeared to continue as Lancaster's videos has shown, although very unreported in western media.[13]
In the Russian official narrative in the buildup to the war, Donbass was supposed to be under extraordinary threat or stress. To further this narrative, Russia in February instigated a series of false flag attacks of limited credibility, blowing up the car of a police official (but being extra cheap they didn’t even use his real car)[14]; "Ukrainian shelling” completely destroyed an empty residence and a farm building outside Rostov (inside Russia)[15]; an FSB border post in the middle of the forest was allegedly blown up with no causalities; a (presumably fake) car bomb was found on the route of evacuation buses with civilians[16][17]. In yet another coincidence the Lada bomb was discovered in the nick of time by the ultra-competent LPR militia. (And then blown up. Once again it’s the cheapest possible car that gets blown up.)[16]
