History

From 1946-1953 the U.S. Public Health Service and the U.S. National Institutes of Health organised the Guatemala syphilis experiment, which exposed around 1,500 Guatemalans to syphilis and other STDs without consent. Less than half were ever given any form of treatment.[1]

On 10 May 2013, Guatemalan General Rios Montt (a friend of Ronald Reagan) became the only former head of state ever to have been convicted in his own country for genocide. On 8 July 2015 a Guatemalan court stated that the trial must be abandoned, as Montt was "mentally incompetent to stand trial". A retrial of his case had been promised, but Eric Zuesse opined in 2015 that this "seems unlikely".[3]
