Jewish-Dutch banker "tightly woven into the cobweb of transatlantic financial structures". Father of Ernst van der Beugel

Theodor Max van der Beugel was a Jewish-Dutch banker banker and father of Ernst van der Beugel.

Overview

Theodor Max van der Beugel was born in modest circumstances, as the son of a hairdresser, but rose as a self-made man in the banking world.

As a reorganizer of bankrupt businesses, Theodor Max van der Beugel had made it to senior partner of Labouchére & Co — one of the most eminent banking houses in Amsterdam which he had established together with Henri Labouchére. In practice, Van der Beugel ran the place, while Henri Labouchére, a real 'country gentleman'; contributed the illustrious name.

Theodor van der Beugel travelled an awful lot and had an exceptional cosmopolitan orientation for his time. His network of friends and colleagues was tightly woven into the cobweb of transatlantic financial structures. He closely cooperated with the Warburg bank in London, Lazard in Paris and Chase in New York and was widely acknowledged as a member of the international haute finance.[1]

Although one of the richest men in the country, he tended to support liberal causes and was sympathetic to the Social Democrats.
