Sheila Birnbaum was chosen by Eric Holder in 2011 to head the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund program.[1]

Sheila Birnbaum was Vice President of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.[2]
September 11, 2001
Sheila Birnbaum was made 'special mediator' of legal claims by families who did not initially accept payments from the 9-11/Compensation fund established under Kenneth Feinberg. As with that fund, anyone filing a claim with this fund, was required to "waive the right to sue any of the entities that ran the rescue, recovery and cleanup efforts at ground zero, including private contractors and the City of New York. Moreover, claimants cannot appeal the fund’s decisions."[3]
The September 11th Victim Compensation Website reports that Birnbaum mediated "a settlement of $500 million for 92 families of victims of the September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center".[4]
Later activities
Sheila Birnbaum became a partner in a New York office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan Uk Llp in April 2013, and was its Global Co-Head of Products Liability & Mass Torts Practice.[5]
