The Mercury News, formerly the San Jose Mercury News, employed Gary Webb, who exposed CIA Drug trafficking.

Pressure

Commercially-controlled media attacked Gary Webb, saying sometimes that the revelations in Dark Alliance were unfounded, sometimes that they were nothing new. Operation Mockingbird operatives were employed to confuse and misdirect. A declassified CIA document cites Tucker Carlson's Weekly Standard article, among others, as aiding them in "managing a nightmare."[1] After initially backing him on the story, the leadership of the San Jose Mercury News[Who?] backed away from the story after it gained national traction.[2]

Journalist“This story of CIA drug dealing became a sensation because of the website, not because of the story, but because people could get to it. And they could never have gotten to it before because the San Jose Mercury News is a small regional newspaper in Northern California that you couldn't read if you lived in New York or you couldn't read if you lived in L.A.. But this story you could read anywhere in the world.”Gary Webb2003
