Patrick M. Byrne resigned as CEO of Overstock in August 2019, saying he was “far too controversial” after revealing that he had aided in a deep state investigation into the US 2016 election and that he was romantically involved with Maria Butina, whom the Washington Post described as a Russian gun rights activist who is now serving 18 months in prison for trying to influence U.S. policy ahead of the 2016 election.".[1]
